Why We Do Not Sell Medicare Advantage Plans

The first principle of insurance is simple: identify the risk, then manage the risk.

Health conditions do not start and stop on January 1st. A diagnosis made this year may need care for many years. Managing that risk means being able to see the doctors and hospitals you want, for as long as you need them.

A Medicare Advantage plan is a twelve-month contract. Every year the network, the providers, the approval rules and the costs can change. Your health does not reset every January. Your plan should not either.

That is why Hardin Insurance sells Medicare Supplement plans with Original Medicare, and does not sell Medicare Advantage.

The most important thing to understand: the door does not always open again

Most people believe that if they do not like their Medicare Advantage plan, they can simply switch back to Original Medicare and pick up a Medicare Supplement. That is not how it works.

  • Leaving Advantage is easy. Getting a Supplement is not. You can return to Original Medicare during the fall enrollment period. But a Medicare Supplement is a separate policy with its own application — and in most cases, its own health questions.
  • You have to be approved. Outside your one-time open enrollment when you first take Part B, or a narrow set of guaranteed-issue situations, the insurance company can decline you based on your health.
  • The reason you want to leave is often the reason you cannot. People rarely leave an Advantage plan while they are healthy. They leave after a diagnosis, when a hospital they need is out of network. That diagnosis is exactly what the Supplement application asks about.
  • The birthday rule does not rescue you. In the states that have one, a birthday or anniversary rule lets someone who already has a Medicare Supplement move to another Supplement without underwriting. If you are on a Medicare Advantage plan, you have nothing to move.
  • Most states do not give you a second chance. Only a handful of states — New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts — let people buy a Medicare Supplement at any time of year without health questions. In most of the country, including Georgia, the insurance company can ask about your health and say no. Hardin Insurance is licensed in the states listed below and is not licensed in New York.

Medicare Advantage enrollment is an annual decision. Coming back is not. This is why the choice made at 65 matters far more than it appears to at the time.

What we know for certain

There is a lot about Medicare Advantage that cannot be known in advance — whether your doctor will still be in the network next year, or whether a provider listed as “in network” will prioritize your appointment. But a few things are certain:

  • The contract lasts twelve months. The plan you have today is not the plan you are promised next year.
  • The maximum out of pocket is high. In-network limits are commonly in the $5,000 to $6,000 range, and out-of-network limits are higher.
  • Networks belong to the plan, not to you. If a hospital or specialist leaves the network, you leave with them or you pay out-of-network costs.

What a Medicare Supplement gives you instead

  • No network. You may see any doctor or hospital in the United States that accepts Medicare.
  • No referrals. You do not need permission to see a specialist.
  • A predictable cap on your exposure. Even the lowest-premium option, High Deductible Plan G, limits your out-of-pocket for Medicare-covered services to $2,950 in 2026 — with no network attached.
  • Renewable for life. As long as you pay the premium, the plan cannot be cancelled because of your health.

We do not usually recommend High Deductible Plan G as a first choice. But its existence matters: it means there is always a way to keep Original Medicare, with no network, at a low premium. Because that option exists, we see no reason to recommend a twelve-month plan for a lifetime risk.

Where the country’s leading hospitals stand

Do not take our word for it. These centers publish their own insurance policies, and we link to their pages directly:

With Original Medicare and a Medicare Supplement, you are not limited to a network. No referral needed.

Talk to us

If you have Original Medicare and a Medicare Supplement, you can apply to change your Supplement any month of the year. Only your drug plan is tied to the fall enrollment season.

If you are on a Medicare Advantage plan and want to understand your options for returning to Original Medicare, call us. Some situations allow a change without health questions; others require underwriting. We will tell you honestly which applies to you.
